A Concerning Increase in Pedestrian Accidents

One of the easy things to forget amongst the 24 hour news cycle is that we live in one of the safest times in the history of this country. Deaths from homicide, disease, and accidents are all down to 50 year lows, and decreasing annually. Regulation, public education, and technological advances have brought road deaths to an all time low, and there's every reason to believe that the numbers will keep dropping.

One statistic, however, is not decreasing, and is in fact nearing highs not seen in 30 years: pedestrian deaths. Nationwide, pedestrian deaths have increased 27% from 2007 to 2016, and the disturbing trend seems to be increasing. California, Florida, Texas, New York and Arizona accounted for 43 percent of all pedestrian deaths in 2017, despite only representing around 30 percent of the population.

San Diego is experiencing a 7 year surge in pedestrian deaths, with each passing year seeing a new record broken. In 2016, pedestrian deaths equaled those of the early 90's. The city of San Diego is the 7 th most dangerous city in America for pedestrians, and worryingly, the trend shows no sign of stopping.

While experts still aren't sure what is causing the increase, they do point to two major factors that seem to be contributing to the rising pedestrian death rate:

Smartphone Usage:

Smartphone usage, a significant source of distraction, increased by 236 percent between 2010 and 2016. This, combined with the rising population of urban areas, means city streets filled with more people, paying less attention, and possibly putting themselves into increasingly perilous situations.

Federal data shows that 75% of all pedestrian fatalities occur at night. Cities that have successfully addressed the pedestrian issue, halting or even reversing the trend, have made major investments in improving street lighting.
