What to do after a car accident

The moments after a car accident are usually a blur. Knowing what steps to take to protect yourself legally (and otherwise) can be a challenge when you are likely in a state of shock.

Print this page: We recommend printing this page and keeping it in your car. In the event of an accident - which we hope will never happen - you will have this checklist handy.

  • Call 911: Call as soon as possible to report the accident. If you are unable to do this yourself, ask someone else to do it.
  • Seek medical attention: If you or someone else is injured, get medical attention -- even if your injuries seem minor. Not all injuries may be visible or known, so it is important to see a doctor.
  • Exchange contact information: Get the insurance and contact information from the other driver or drivers involved. If there are any accident witnesses, exchange phone numbers and email addresses with them.
  • Document the accident scene: Take photos of the accident scene. If you are unable to do this yourself, ask someone else to do it.
  • Document your medical treatment and injuries: Take photos of your injuries. Keep record of all doctor visits. This information will be beneficial when it comes time to file a claim.
  • Report the accident to your insurance company: Give the facts of what happened to the insurance adjustor, but do not admit fault. An accident investigation will determine the cause of the accident.
  • Call a personal injury attorney: Get a legal advocate on your side as soon as possible. At Injury Recovery Group, we offer a free consultation and you pay no fees unless we recover compensation on your behalf.
